The Dhangars in Goa are recognized as Shepherds who similar to the Maratha Shepherds of Konkan and the Southern Maratha Country. In Goa they are known as Goullis. They prefer to live in the forests where waste lands are widespread enabling their cattle to graze, the Dhangars who keep buffaloes, supplies fat and milk have been spread into Goa.
In Goa they have been mostly situated in Cancona, Quepem, Ponda and Sanguem taluka for generations. Their relations are also to be found in Karwar of Karnataka and Sawantwadi in Maharashtra. According to enthoven, Dhangars are distributed all over the Deccan, Konkan and some parts of Northern and Eastern India. The Dhangars are treated as farm servants. The present field of investigation is undertaken in Dabal which is an isolated hamlet, called Dhangarwadi in the Poinguinim village of Cancona block.
Hamlets are situated in Bhuipal, Molem, Bhutkham, Bondir, Malpone, Kumbarkhand, Navge in Sattari ae well as Colem and Calay in Sanguem taluka, Goulli are also found in 114 hamlets in 10 talukas, their population tends at 7,583, this hardworking sober and thrifty community lives in isolation in the foothills of the Ghats,where they find plenty of postures for their cattles.
