Position of Women
Women holds the prime position in the Indian society. Likewise in the Indian society, a women holds the same position in the Dhangar community also. She obeys all the relations very obediently and efficiently whether it is a daughter or sister. Woman from the Dhangar community successfully performs the other responsibilities of a house.
The girl has to shoulder the responsibility of a married woman at a very tender age. After marriage the girl has to stay at her parent's house till she becomes adult. When the girl was able to independently herd the goat, it was said that a girl attained the age, wherein she can go to her husbands house. After that her life was not so easy and effortless. She had to toil the whole day, from early morning till late night. Along with the daily household work, she had to look after the feed and other work of cattle and goats.
Her day used to start early morning. Soon after waking up she had to assist her mother in law in preparing the flour of grains on handmill. Later there was also a responsibility of preparing bhakari for breakfast. After finishing this task she had to go either with her husband or any other responsible person from the family in the forest to herd the cattle. Even in illness she had to fulfill the responsibility of looking after the cattle. Sometimes she had to alone handle the responsibility of taking the cattle, goats, sheeps. She was never told to take rest even in her heavy pregnancy and was also not much cared for by the family. She had to roam around in the forest even she was nini months pregnant. Sometimes if she delivers a baby in this condition in the forest she was not helped by her family or a doctor and she herself had to complete the entire task involved in the delivery of a child. Therefore a woman from this community had become very strong.
In ancient time, there was a tradition of marrying many women in this community. Hence one man had a permission to marry atleast four to five women. Because of this, generally one man had atleast two wife's. If first wife does not conceive before the third monsoon season after marriage a man was free to marry the second time. If the same problem occurs in the second marriage than the man used to go for third marriage. And if the third wife also failed to conceive she was solely held responsible for the same. Than the lady was probably tortured by the family. Women from the Dhangar community gradually started becoming very courageous and fearless. She skilfully did the work of milching,fetching of cows,buffaloes,goats etc. She even grasped the knowledge of medicinal plants used to cure animals from their routine ailments.
The life style of a woman from Dhangar community is different as compared to other communities. The woman from Dhangar Community lives with different style and music. They have the zest to fight with the nature, that's why they get very little time for relaxing and for entertainment.
